Every fragrance listing shows a pyramid of notes - bergamot, jasmine, musk - but nobody explains how to read it. Once you can, you can predict how a perfume will smell on you, how long it will last, and whether the dupe is faithful, all before spending a dollar.
The three layers, decoded
Top notes (0-30 minutes)
Citrus, spices, aromatics, light fruits. This is the handshake - bright, loud, and gone fast. Never judge a perfume by its top notes alone: they are chemically incapable of staying.
Heart notes (30 min - 4 hours)
Florals, richer fruits, teas, soft spices. This is the personality of the fragrance and what people around you smell most of the day.
Base notes (4-12 hours)
Woods, ambers, musks, vanilla, resins. The anchor. If a listing shows a weak base, the perfume dies early - full explanation in why your perfume does not last.
How to predict if you will love it
